Introduction: Welcome to a seven-part series on the subject entitled How FAITH Facilitates Effective Parenting. My name is Martin, and I am excited to embark on this discussion with you. Parenting is both a taxing and fulfilling responsibility. Many of us assume we know how to parent until we face real-life challenges.
If you’ve ever found yourself tongue-tied, unsure of what to do or say, you are not alone. As a father of a 14-year-old girl, I’ve had my fair share of such moments. This series is not about lecturing you but about presenting insights that, when embraced, can transform your parenting journey into a fulfilling experience.
Understanding Effective Parenting
Before diving in, let’s define Effective Parenting. I champion a model called SHAPE Parenting, which directs parents to the emotional, mental, and spiritual resources within them. Every individual is born with the potential to be a parent, not just when they have a child but inherently. However, without conscious nurturing, this potential remains dormant. Ideally, as we grow physically, our emotional, mental, and spiritual capacities should also develop, equipping us for the demands of parenting.
FAITH as the Foundation of Parenting
1. FAITH Connects You to the Source of the Child
One of the most powerful ways faith facilitates effective parenting is by connecting you to the true source of your child—God. The Bible, in Psalms 127:3, states:
"Children are indeed a heritage from the Lord, and the fruit of the womb is His reward."
This verse highlights a profound truth: your child is not your possession but a divine gift. You are merely a steward, entrusted with the responsibility to nurture and guide this child according to God's design and purpose.
Understanding Stewardship in Parenting
As a steward, you are given power, authority, and privileges to care for something precious on behalf of the owner—God. Your role as a parent is to faithfully execute your responsibilities, not according to personal preferences, societal trends, or fleeting emotions, but according to the principles established by God. Effective parenting, therefore, requires alignment with God's vision for your child.
Faith acts as the conduit through which divine wisdom, guidance, and resources flow from God to you, and ultimately to your child. God, being all-knowing, understands your child's personality, strengths, and destiny. When you parent with faith, you tap into divine insight that helps you nurture your child into the person they were created to be.
The Principle of Divine Delegation
God is all-powerful and could directly oversee your child’s growth. However, the governing principle He established is that earthly matters require physical participation. As parents, we serve as the earthly representatives of God’s will, acting as vessels through which His wisdom, love, and purpose are transmitted to our children. Without faith, we risk substituting divine principles with worldly ideologies, which may not align with God's plan for our child’s destiny.
